A professional carpet cleaning appointment isn't just "spray and vacuum." There's a defined process that separates a thorough clean from a surface treatment. Here's what happens step by step when an Alberta Home Services technician arrives at your home.

Step 1: Pre-Inspection

Before any cleaning begins, the technician walks the carpeted areas with you to identify key areas of concern — heavy traffic zones, visible stains, pet activity areas, and any delicate fibre types that need special treatment. This inspection sets expectations and lets the tech select the appropriate pre-treatment solutions.

Step 2: Dry Vacuuming

Professional-grade dry vacuuming is performed before any moisture is introduced. This step is often skipped by less thorough operations, but it's essential — dry vacuuming removes loose dry soil, pet hair, and surface debris that would otherwise turn to mud when wet, making extraction harder and less effective.

Step 3: Pre-Treatment

A pre-conditioning solution is applied to the carpet and allowed to dwell for several minutes. This solution is formulated to break the bond between soil particles and carpet fibres, making them easier to extract. Stain-specific treatments are applied to spots and high-traffic areas at this stage.

For pet urine areas, an enzyme pre-treatment is applied — enzymes biologically break down uric acid crystals (the source of odour) rather than simply masking them.

Step 4: Agitation

A grooming brush or mechanical agitator works the pre-treatment deeper into the fibre pile, ensuring the solution reaches the base of the fibres where the heaviest soil accumulates. This step is especially important for dense or high-pile carpets.

Step 5: Hot Water Extraction (ThermoRinse®)

This is the main cleaning pass. The technician works methodically through each area with the cleaning wand, injecting heated water under pressure and simultaneously extracting it back out along with the loosened soil. The ThermoRinse® solution provides a pH-balanced rinse, ensuring no alkaline residue is left behind in the fibre.

Multiple passes are made over heavily soiled areas. The process continues until extraction water runs clean.

Step 6: Spot Treatment

Any remaining spots that didn't fully lift during the main extraction pass receive targeted treatment with appropriate spot removers. Different stains respond to different treatments — protein-based stains (blood, dairy), tannin stains (coffee, tea, wine), and oil-based stains each have their own chemistry.

Step 7: Post-Treatment (Optional Add-Ons)

Optional add-on treatments applied after cleaning:

  • Fibre protector (Scotchgard-type) — applies a protective coating to repel future staining and make spot cleaning easier
  • Deodorizer — neutralizes residual odours not eliminated during cleaning
  • Antimicrobial treatment — inhibits microbial growth, useful in pet households or after flooding

Step 8: Grooming and Drying

After extraction, a carpet rake or grooming tool is used to lift the fibre pile to its natural position and encourage even drying. Furniture tabs or blocks are placed under any furniture legs to prevent rust or dye transfer to the damp carpet.

Drying time depends on carpet type, pile depth, ambient humidity, and airflow. Typical drying times:

ConditionDrying Time
Standard carpet, good airflow, low humidity2–3 hours
Dense pile, limited airflow3–5 hours
Wool or thicker cut-pile4–6 hours
High ambient humidity4–8 hours

Speed up drying: Open windows, run ceiling fans, and turn your furnace fan to "on" (not "auto") to circulate air. Avoid walking on the carpet until fully dry, as wet fibres mat down and attract soil more readily.
